Course Information

The summer school courses provide an introduction to European Cultural Studies. In one of the offered courses, the focus will be on history, politics, and everyday life in this area, whereas in the other course, special attention will be given to visual information transfer, its underlying codes, and the realities pictures are able to generate. Hence, students will be given ample opportunity to train their visual literacy and competence.

Course Selection (Online Program)

The univie: summer school for European Cultural Studies offers two courses.

Students can choose to attend one or two courses: Students can select one course during the early morning (8:30am –10:30am) and one during the late morning (11:00am –1:00pm). For further details please see the schedule.

While students have to fulfill the Sommerhochschule requirements, course selection should also be made according to the requirements of the respective home university. It is recommended to discuss course selections with representatives of the home universities to ensure or simplify accreditation after the program.

Course Participation (Online Program)

Course particiption will be evaluated in each course. It is recommended to participate live in the online courses, as this allows active participation during the lessons.

Students who cannot participate live, because of the time difference, have the option to access and stream the lesson at a later point. In this case it is important to show participation by by communicating with the lecturers electronically.

General Requirements (Online Program)

Applicants should make sure that they can be online during the course hours given in the schedule. Please note that times are given in Central European Time (CET). Therefore, please check the time difference between Austria and your country of residence.

We also recommend that you make sure to have a quiet and appropriate working space.

To ensure a pleasant learning environment, participants are asked to adhere to general netiquette rules.

Technical Requirements (Online Program)

To participate in the online courses a stable internet connection (10 MBit/s Download, 5 MBit/s Upload) is required. If you are unsure of the internet speed at your specific location, please check your connection here: https://www.speedtest.net.

Please make sure you have a fully functional device, such as a computer, a laptop or a tablet. The use of smart phones is not recommended due to the reduced screen size. To improve the audio quality the use of a headset is recommended.

The learning platform and video conferencing system used for the online courses are compatible with all common web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari). When using the web conferencing system please avoid using a VPN.

English Language Requirement (Online Program)

The language of instruction is English. For participation in the univie: winter school courses an English level comparable to C1 (within the CEFR) is recommended. Applicants with a high B2 level (within the CEFR) can also be accepted.

ECTS Credits & Contact Hours (Online Program)

The Summer School offers two courses with 4 ECTS credits per course (corresponding to 32 contact hours). Each contact hour consists of 45 minutes classroom teaching.

In the course of the two-week program students can attend two courses and obtain up to 8 ECTS credits.

Exams & Grading System (Online Program)

Final examinations are given in all courses. Courses are graded using the Austrian grading system: 1 (Sehr gut/very good); 2 (Gut/good); 3 (Befriedigend/satisfactory); 4 (Genügend/sufficient); 5 (Nicht genügend/failed). The grade points given in the transcript provide an opportunity to differentiate performance within each of the stated grades.

The Sommerhochschule reserves the right to exclude students from the summer school in case of improper behavior.

Transcripts (Online Program)

Transcripts of Record will be given to those students who attend classes regularly and who pass the exams.

Cancellation of Courses (Online Program)

The Sommerhochschule reserves the right to cancel any course for which the number of registered students is deemed insufficient, or for other compelling reasons.
